Tax relief & allowances

How does Gift Aid tax relief work?

Gift Aid lets charities and community amateur sports clubs reclaim the basic-rate tax on donations from UK taxpayers, increasing the value of your gift at no extra cost to you. If you pay tax above the basic rate, you can also claim back the difference yourself through HMRC.

Gift Aid works because your donation is treated as if it has already had basic-rate tax deducted. When you make a Gift Aid declaration, the charity can reclaim that tax from HMRC, so your donation is worth more to the cause without you paying anything extra. You just need to have paid at least as much tax as the charity will reclaim.

There is a second benefit for people who pay tax above the basic rate. The charity only reclaims the basic-rate portion, so a higher-rate or additional-rate taxpayer can claim the further relief between the basic rate and their own rate. This part is claimed by you, usually through Self Assessment, and is frequently overlooked.

It is your responsibility to make sure you have paid enough tax to cover what charities reclaim on your Gift Aid donations, otherwise you may have to make up the shortfall. Keeping a record of your donations makes both claiming the higher-rate element and checking your tax position much easier, so it is worth doing if you give regularly.

How to make the most of Gift Aid

  1. Make a Gift Aid declaration. Tick the Gift Aid box or complete a declaration when you donate, so the charity can reclaim basic-rate tax.
  2. Keep a record of donations. Note the charities, amounts and dates so you can check your tax position and claim any extra relief.
  3. Check your tax covers it. Make sure you have paid enough tax in the year to cover what charities reclaim on your behalf.
  4. Claim higher-rate relief. If you pay tax above the basic rate, claim the additional relief through Self Assessment or by contacting HMRC.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay tax to use Gift Aid?
Yes. You must have paid at least as much Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax as the charity will reclaim on your donations in that year.
What can higher-rate taxpayers claim?
The charity reclaims basic-rate tax, but higher and additional-rate taxpayers can claim the difference between the basic rate and their own rate.
How do I claim the extra relief?
Usually through Self Assessment by recording your Gift Aid donations, or by contacting HMRC if you do not file a return.
What if I have not paid enough tax?
You should not make a Gift Aid declaration for more than your tax covers, as you may have to repay the shortfall to HMRC.
